Amir‘s commentary to the song:
>> After having been introduced to Bryan Black of Motor by our friends Virgin Tears, we quickly turned into fans of Motor’s minimal/electro/techno style. Almost immediately, we recruited Bryan for a remix of our song “Technical Difficulties.”

As a result, he came up with two different versions: The “Black Mix” and the “Synth Attak Mix”. The complete line-up of Motor sat down to create two gaudy remixes of “Someday Soon” – the Motor Remix and the Motor Deconstruct Mix. During the remixing process I could also convince the guys to let us make a JK RMX of “Flashback” (a song off their album “Unhuman”). The song just stuck out and immediately appealed to Fu and me because of this heavy, synth-laden chorus… but we actually wondered: What could we do in order to make this remix unique? The answer: We added even more heaviness and power to it!

Our version has the name “Flashback Acid Test” and will only be included on the American iTunes release of the album, and it will surely appear at many places in the web.

Amir‘s commentary to the song:
>> We from Julien-K were actually lucky to be the opener at some unannounced Mindless Self Indulgence shows, and of course we quickly became friends with the guys and their manager James. After having listened to the remix that we had made with Chester for the Underworld: Evolution soundtrack , they asked us (including Chester) right away if we were interesting in remixing their new single. Of course we said yes and then started to reinvent the song from scratch – with new beats, bass lines, guitar riffs, and synthies. Then, Fu even manipulated some of Jimmy’s vocal melodies so that they fit to our new arrangement, and we let Ryan sing new background vocals, which MSI really liked. It was a great feeling not to be limited by a band in how to approach a song, so everything was a lot of fun. Even though there was some confusion at the beginning what exactly Chester’s role in the work for the remix was (of course the people thought he would sing on it!), he added a lot to our overall production and had several great ideas (e.g. he suggested to cop the vocals in the second bridge for a bit, and he also generally simplified a few of our arrangements that led to big changes.

The remix was released on a special EP called Another Mindless Rip Off that can only be purchased in Hot Topic stores in the USA.

Instrumentals

Mindless Self Indulgence vs. Julien-K & Chester Bennington – What Do They Know? (Instrumental DJ Dub)

Amir‘s commentary to the song:
>> This non-vocal re-edit of our MSI remix is the Bastard Son club version of our synth master Fu. We thought it would be fun and also a challenge to create a totally re-edited version that only consists of left-over material of the tracks we had just recorded. We didn’t use anything from the original song in this edit. That’s why we offered the song as a free download on our official Julien-K homepage for some while.

Previously Unreleased Remixes

Avenged Sevenfold – Strength Of The World (Julien-K Remix)

Amir‘s commentary to the song:
>> Ryan and I always ran into the guys from Avenged Sevenfold for some while, and they belong to the most authentic people that we had met in a long time. So it’s actually no surprise that it ended up in a collaboration.

Recently I met the guys once again at a friend’s place while we were watching the “Super Bowl.” After having talked to M. Shadows for a bit, I voiced the idea to produce an industrial-like remix for them.

He was immediately pleased at the idea to revamp their sound by means of some electronic elements and programming aspects, and that’s how things started.

Some months later, the guys came to us and asked if we could do a remix for one of their songs that would probably be used for a movie. From two potential songs, we finally selected the 9-minute song epos “Strength Of The World” off the album “City Of Evil.” Fu and me went straight to work. We began with programming the drums and a synthie bass, and then edited the song so that its length was cut down to 6 minutes. Afterwards, we wrote new guitar arrangements, added several vocoder parts, and Ryan even recorded new background vocals. The Avenged Sevenfold were really pleased with the result… Mission accomplished!

Dirty Heads – Neighborhood (Julien-K Remix)

Amir‘s commentary to the song:
>> In case you haven’t heard of the Dirty Heads, this will be changed soon. The guys blend hip-hop, reggae, and rock in a completely unique way, just like bands such as 311, Sublime, and the Beastie Boys did. We were asked by them if we would like to do a Julien-K remix to the song, and we gladly took the challenge. The track came along pretty fast and was 95 % completely only after few days. I wished this would be the case with all songs. Finally we decided for a pumping bass and driving bass synthies, however the vocals were cut back to a minimum because the raps in the verses just didn’t sound good in our new tempo. I think you will get to hear the song in a club, because it will most likely only be released as a white label vinyl or via the internet!
