Biography
Liverpool’s The Delta Fiasco exude an elegantly wasted allure of expansive proportions. Their blend of heavy guitars, intense drums and mutant bleeps combine sublimely with Nathan Walczak’s twisted falsetto to create an intoxicating rush of head-swirling sound. Smelting avant-garde rock with European electronica, they have created a “happening” of dizzying originality.
Congregating in Liverpool, they quickly fell into the city’s subversive nocturnal underground. Falling in love with the scene that congregated around Ladytron’s legendary club night Evol, the boys were turned onto a barrage of new influences and broadened their cultural horizons massively. Existing on a diet of underground music, cult literature and basement clubs, their newly crafted lifestyle demanded a newly crafted sound. It was here The Delta Fiasco was conceived: an analogy for disillusioned, despondent soldiers who shot their allies in the back as they headed over the trenches.
Originally a duo; Nick Bentley (synths/programming/guitars) and Nathan Walczak (guitars/vocals)worked tirelessly on the Liverpool scene, developing a tightly wound aesthetic along the way. Utilizing the experimental approach of laptop-as-instrument, a wall-of-sound symphony of cinematic grandiose emerged from the electronic wizardry of Nick Bentley, which, when melded with Nathan’s soaring vocals and provocative lyrics, identifies them as architects of a euphorically dark marriage of electronica and guitars. With the addition of drummer Simon Hilton, the sonic ambitions present on single “Paperhouse” could be realized.
Expertly produced by Anthony “Fu” Valcic and Jagz Kooner, the single is a perfect example of their current sound; pulsating drums and haunting vocals exchange sonic waves with a rousing slice of swirling guitars. Gathering pace, it unleashes like a beast, entering and withdrawing tauntingly, before reaching a euphoric climax of electronic mash-up. In the past Fu Valcic has worked with Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson and Jagz with Primal Scream, Radio 4 and Kasabian. The theatrical, expansive production techniques developed working with these artists is clearly utilized to great effect here.
The forthcoming Dreameater EP was recorded in Los Angeles while the band resided with label mates The Virgin Tears (whose member Dave Ziebarth is also the current manager of The Delta Fiasco). Although the Deltas sound dark on paper, there is a definite optimism shining through their recordings and live performances; a sharp, white, sheet lightning exploding in their vastly dark sky. This has been influenced in part by the location of their Los Angeles recording studio which enabled the Deltas to make “dark music tinged with sunshine” – the perfect analogy for both L.A. and what their sound is all about.
Ardently passionate about performance art and the live arena, the Deltas have painstakingly crafted a live routine of rousing spectacle. After aggressively intense headline shows through the UK, the trio took their sound to bigger crowds and bigger global arenas where they have impressed massively, supporting The Gossip, The Presets, New Young Pony Club, Klaxons, Patrick Wolf and The Long Blondes.
Their “DJ” style take on live performance, means a non-stop, high energy, electronic dance show that portrays a diverse take on their recorded tracks. As vocalist Walczak puts it himself: “Each night is a moment to catch just one person in the crowd thinking, ‘What the fuck is happening?’”
Articulate, hedonistic, and dizzyingly intense. A breathless proposition!
